TBEX 2014 Heading To Cancun?
It appears that TBEX North America 2014, the world’s largest conference for travel bloggers, is heading south of the border (the U.S. border that is) to Cancun, Mexico, this year, though no official announcement has been made as of yet. Two individuals with knowledge of the announcement have confirmed that this year’s conference will in fact be heading to the Yucatán Peninsula, this after being held in Canadian locations two of the last three years (Vancouver and Toronto in 2011 and 2013 respectively; Colorado in 2012).
Though rumors surfaced earlier this year in February that the conference was going to be held in Las Vegas after a blog post on the TBEX web site was inadvertently published, it appears that after winnowing the selection down to three potential locations, Cancun was chosen. A Louisiana location, reportedly Baton Rouge, was set to be announced shortly after last year’s conference in Toronto, but concerns about the proposed venue’s Wi-Fi capabilities caused the deal to fall through.
In what has now become a familiar occurrence, the screenshot above was taken of a page on the TBEX site that was published then taken down shortly thereafter. Though any font resembling Comic Sans is strictly prohibited here at TheExpeditioner.com and is widely considered not to be best practices for web design, these particular button styles and background is consistent with the current design format found on the current TBEX site.
Having traveled to Cancun myself in 2012 with a healthy dose of skepticism beforehand, I can safely say that Cancun is much more than hotels and spring break, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much the region itself had to offer for travelers. Nearby sights including Chichen Itza, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, downtown Cancun and the area’s numerous cenotes will likely be offered as related trips before and after the conference.
The conference itself will presumably be held at the Cancun Center, the city’s main convention center (or centro de convenciones for those looking to get a jump start on their Spanish). Located in the “hotel zone” — which for those of you who’ve never been, is that area of the city along the coastline extending northward and southward from Senor Frog’s — the center offers 75,000 square feet of convention space and can hold up to 6,600 convention-goers. Also, according to Google Maps, it is an approximately 7-minute-walk to CoCo Bongo.
TheExpeditioner.com has reached out to representatives from TBEX for a response, but have not received an official confirmation or denial. Either way, the mood around TheExpeditioner headquarters is one of general approval and contentment if this rumor pans out, with one staffer responding when learning of the news, “Cool, I like the beach.”
UPDATED (May 20, 1:25 p.m.): I’ve heard from another reliable source that the proposed date for the conference is September 12-13, which would put it exactly 6 weeks ahead of TBEX Europe, taking place in Athens from October 23-25. This date makes sense given that anything scheduled for an earlier date would be extremely difficult to coordinate for most people given that we’re already almost into June as it is. It also would provide enough of a break between the two conferences to avoid any general overlap of coverage and attendance.
