December 16 Weekly Roundup: Is Middle Earth In Malawi?; JetBlue Gets Wi Fi; Visiting Hemingways Home In Cuba

I come across lots of interesting travel stories during the week, only some of which I have time to blog about. So you don’t miss anything, here’s a roundup of the most interesting travel stories you may have missed.

Stories You May Have Missed: Week of December 16 Edition

• Was it Malawi, in central Africa, that actually inspired Middle Earth for a young J.R.R. Tolkien (and definitely not New Zealand, contrary to what certain pudgy, bearded directors want you to think)? An intrepid traveler goes in search of clues. [A trek across Malawi’s Mount Mulanje, long rumored to have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien]

• Better late than never, JetBlue finally launched its own wi-fi service, beginning with three of its flights on Thursday. It’s free, for now, but if you want the ability to stream movies or download large files, fliers will need to pony up $9/hour. The big question now is how much it would cost to make people actually want to stream Homeland this season? [JetBlue launches free in-flight Wi-Fi]

• Cenotes, those water-filled sinkholes mostly found in the Yucatan, are also pretty intriguing places for an odd glamor photo shoot. Click through to the BBC slideshow for the surreal images. [Surreal shapes in Mexico’s cenotes]

• Japan is a relatively small island chain given the number of people that live there. It’s also one of the best countries to eat at as well, so lucky for you, you can probably knock off quite a few of these top 10 places to eat in Japan while you’re there. [Japan's top 10 culinary locations]

• Lastly, while you’re bundled up outside in the depths of the winter cold, you might want to escape a bit and take a trip to Hemingway’s retreat in Havana, Finca Vigía. It had fallen on hard times, but a few years ago, the foundation in charge of the house has been busy making repairs, preserving the house’s contents, and even maintaining his sharpened pencils for travelers to see when they visit.
